- Chanting Whirling Dervish
Mevlana whirling dervishes are the followers of Mawlana Jalaluddin Rumi. He was a great scholar who lived in the 13th century in Konya, Turkey and established his Sufi movement known as Mawlawiyya. His followers, during their rituals, rotate around themselves and around an axis as the planets rotate around themselves and around the sun. One of their hands is open upwards for knowledge from God and the other is turned down to distribute what they have to the people. They always wear white dresses to represent their purity.The whirling dervish experiences a spiritual journey that brings him closer to God. As well as inner peace it brings about a meditative state which leads to greater enlightenment.
